ATO Makes EFT of Refunds Mandatory for 2013 Onwards

From 1 July 2013 when preparing your individual income tax return, taxpayers now need to include their nominated Australian bank account details when a refund is expected since the ATO will no longer issue refund cheques.

The ATO says Electronic funds transfer (EFT) is the fastest, most-secure way for taxpayers to receive their refunds.

For those taxpayers using an accountant/tax agent, a deduct fee from refund option is often available, and is a convenient way to get your tax return done.

For those clients who use our online tax return preparation service at eZtax, a deduct fee from refund option is available.

Allowance Income for Electricians

If any allowance is shown as a separate amount on your payment summary, include it as income at item 2 on your tax return. You must include the whole amount of any award transport payment you received.

Electricians commonly get the following allowances:
  • travel allowance
  • crib allowance
  • meal allowance
  • tool allowance
  • height allowance
  • motor vehicle (based on a cents-per-kilometre basis),
  • uniform.
Receipt of an allowance does not automatically mean that a corresponding tax deduction can be claimed, even if your work might be considered unpleasant, special or dangerous. In order to claim a deduction against an allowance, the expense must actually be incurred and meet the other tests of deductibility, for example, the expense must be incurred in earing the income or allowance.
